Senate Democrats Troubled By School District Cuts

JUNEAU – The Anchorage School District’s announcement they are cutting 215 jobs in the upcoming budget year has Senate Democrats troubled about the funding mechanisms for education.

“Last year Democratic legislators fought for inflation proofing of the education budget.  Again the Governor disappointed us.  The cuts to classroom services we warned about are now here,” said Senator Berta Gardner (D-Anchorage).

The Anchorage School Board President indicated the cuts are due to flat funding — which comes from the State – while expenses continue to rise.

The Governor’s nickel and dime budgeting tactics have again short changed the children of Alaska.

“While the Governor said in his State of the State our schools remain hopeful, he continues to underfund the resources necessary to prepare Alaska’s children for a bright future. This is unacceptable and we will work hard to fix it,” said
Senate Minority Leader Johnny Ellis (D-Anchorage).

Democratic Senators call on parents, educators and students to speak out and share their views on increasingly crowded classrooms in a state with billions of dollars in reserve.
