Legislators ask Attorney General for Investigation
Tragic events in Mt. View highlight deficiencies in criminal justice system
ANCHORAGE – Senator Bill Wielechowski (D-Anchorage), Senator Johnny Ellis (D-Anchorage) and Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) called on Attorney General Michael Geraghty to investigate the circumstances behind the release of a man Saturday who 12 hours later was arrested for a double homicide and sexual assault.
“Alaskans need to know why someone who had been previously charged with multiple assaults and the attempted sexual assault of an 11-year-old girl was walking free this past Saturday, able to murder two elderly Alaskans and sexually assault their two-year-old great granddaughter. This gruesome and tragic crime leaves all Alaskans feeling vulnerable and wondering how someone such as Mr. Active could be released from prison after what appears to be less than two years. We need answers,” stated Senator Wielechowski.
Despite a lengthy criminal history including a conviction for attempted sexual assault of a minor in 2010 and multiple parole violations, Jerry Andrew Active was released from an Alaska correctional facility Saturday after serving less than 2 years behind bars. Roughly 12 hours later Mr. Active was placed under arrest for a double homicide and sexual assault.
“I am shocked and saddened by the tragic events in Mountain View this past weekend. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected. This individual should not have been walking the streets. Period. It is clear that once all the details are in, we must find the right legislative approach to try and prevent this from ever happening again," said Senator Ellis.
“I am appalled that a violent predator such as this man was out of jail after only two years. We need a thorough investigation in order to understand how he slipped through the cracks and make sure this never happens again,” stated Representative Tarr.
Anchorage residents have organized a concert to benefit the families impacted by the tragedy in Mountain View.
