A Special Message from Sen. Johnny Ellis and Rep. Geran Tarr

Sen. Ellis and Rep. Tarr contact info

Dear Neighbor,

Like you, we were shocked and saddened by the tragic crime in Mountain View last weekend.  Our deepest condolences are with all those affected by this tragedy.

Along with Sen. Bill Wielechowski (D-Anchorage), we asked Attorney General Michael Geraghty to investigate why the accused perpetrator was released from jail just hours before this crime.  Once the full details of this case become clear, we intend to pursue whatever changes are necessary to prevent a tragedy like this from ever happening again.

May 29, 2013

Michael C. Geraghty
Attorney General
State of Alaska
P.O. Box 110300
Juneau, AK 99811-0300

Dear Attorney General Geraghty:

We are writing to urge you to investigate the circumstances behind the release of Jerry Andrew Active from prison after his conviction in 2010 for attempted sexual assault of a minor. Alaskans need to know why someone who had been previously charged with multiple assaults and the attempted sexual assault of an 11-year-old girl was walking free this past Saturday, able to murder two elderly Alaskans and sexually assault their two-year-old great granddaughter. This gruesome and tragic crime leaves all Alaskans feeling vulnerable and wondering how someone such as Mr. Active could be released from prison after what appears to be less than two years. We hope you can answer that question.

We urge you to use this incident to identify what went wrong and how we can fix it. We are committed to working with the Department of Law and our colleagues in the legislature to ensure that individuals like Mr. Active are not allowed to
walk our streets freely, endangering Alaskans.

We will never forget those he harmed on May 25th in Mountain View and pray for their large extended family. At the very least, we owe them a legal system that is better able to spot repeat and unrepentant offenders such as Mr. Active.

This past Wednesday, Mountain View residents and citizens from the larger community rallied for a fundraiser to benefit the families of those affected by this terrible crime.  Thank you to community resident Ma’o Tosi and the organization AK Pride for organizing live music performances and a car wash to raise money at this event.
