Senator Wielechowski Offers Amendment to Reduce DMV Fees by 15%
JUNEAU – Today, Senator Bill Wielechowski (D-Anchorage) offered an amendment intended to save Alaskans money by reducing Department of Motor Vehicle fees by 15%.
“DMV operations generate a surplus, and we should give that money back to Alaskans,” said Sen. Wielechowski. “I’m disappointed the majority didn’t agree with me.”
In FY 13, DMV brought in $74 million dollars in fees statewide. The reduction would give approximately $11 million back to Alaskans.
The amendment was offered to Senate Bill 127, which will allow private business owners to retain 15% of DMV fees for themselves.
“If we can afford to give millions to private DMV contractors, who are already charging huge service fees, surely we can give a little back to hard-working Alaskans who could really use it,” said Senator Wielechowksi.
