Federal Investigation Raises More Troubling Questions
JUNEAU – Today Senator Hollis French (D-Anchorage) sent a letter to the Governor with a number of new concerns regarding the current Alaska based inquiry by the National Guard’s Office of Complex Investigations.
“Statements by the Governor surrounding his request for federal investigators to examine the handling of sexual assault cases and allegations in the Alaska National Guard leave me deeply concerned. Alaska deserves answers to these important questions,” stated Senator French.
Senator French’s letter points out that National Guard chaplains indicated that the Parnell administration was told of these problems beginning in the fall of 2010.
Senator French’s letter raised several key questions, including:
– What month and year did Governor Parnell learn the information that led to him call for federal help in this investigation? How did he learn it?
– How is the need for federal assistance in this investigation consistent with the governor’s expression of full confidence in General Katkus? Was General Katkus unable to adequately investigate this matter? Is he a target of the investigation?
– Should members of the guard whose actions are being investigated be placed on administrative leave during the pendency of the investigation?
