Senator Wielechowski Troubled By Supreme Court Ruling
JUNEAU – Today Senator Bill Wielechowski (D-Anchorage) released a statement regarding the 5-4 Supreme Court ruling in the case of McCutcheon v. the Federal Election Commission which greatly expands the individual campaign contribution limits for federal election cycles:
“We began down this unfortunate path with the Citizens United decision allowing unlimited corporate campaign donations. Now wealthy individuals, intent on influencing elections, can contribute huge sums of money to an unlimited number of federal candidates or political parties. This corrupts the political process and strengthens the influence of billionaires and millionaires. This decision is a blow to working families all across the country,” stated Senator Wielechowski.
In McCutcheon, the US Supreme Court overturned yet another campaign finance law put into place following the Watergate scandal intended to put more integrity into the United States political process. To view the McCutcheon decision, click here:
“This unfortunate decision is the work of an activist conservative Supreme Court and is a blow to our democracy. Freedom of speech does not mean the freedom to buy the United States government,” said Senator Wielechowski.
