Wielechowski: “Help Brighten a Kid’s Day through Reading”

Senator joins thread for 9th annual Children’s Book Drive

ANCHORAGE – Senator Bill Wielechowski (D – Anchorage) and thread, Alaska’s statewide child care resource and referral agency, are once again teaming up to promote the 9th annual children’s book drive and Book Party in the Park. Throughout July, donations of new and gently used children’s books will be collected by Anchorage businesses to be given out to children and families at a Book Party on August 13th.

“Reading to children is a critical component of healthy brain development, and it’s a great opportunity to connect with your children and spend quality time,” said Senator Wielechowski. “We are doing this drive so that more children in Anchorage have the opportunity to enjoy reading.”

Beginning July 1st, collection bins for children’s books can be found near the front doors or customer service areas of all Fred Meyer Anchorage locations. The JBER Consolidated Library (Chilkoot Ave., Building #7) will also be accepting donations. In addition, donations can be delivered directly to thread at 3350 Commercial Drive, Suite 203, and the Anchorage Legislative Office at 733 W. 4th Avenue, Suite 100.

“Donations of new and gently used children’s books will help brighten a child’s day and encourage more kids to read,” said Senator Wielechowski.

Donated books will be distributed at thread’s 9th annual Book Party in the Park on Thursday, August 13th at the Garden Art Park in Mountain View (3350 Commercial Drive). From 4:00pm-7:00pm, families are invited to attend this free public event that promotes literacy and supports the quality time families spend reading together. The book party will include storytelling, arts and crafts, live entertainment, distribution of books for children of all ages and other family-focused activities.

“thread’s Book Party in the Park provides a great opportunity for families to connect and discover the joy of reading together. thread’s mission is to advance quality early learning and empower parents as their child’s first teacher,” said Stephanie Berglund, CEO of thread. “Reading books and sharing stories is a great experience for families to have together.”

This year’s book drive and Book Party in the Park are supported by Senator Wielechowski, thread, ConocoPhillips Alaska, Inc., First National Bank Alaska and Fred Meyer.
