Senator Wielechowski Seeks Investigation of Recent Proposed Tesoro Purchase of Gasoline Storage Facilities

State Must Remain Vigilant to Monopolies

ANCHORAGE – Senator Bill Wielechowski (D-Anchorage) has asked Attorney General Craig Richards to fully investigate the recent proposed sale of the Flint Hills gas storage facilities in Anchorage to Tesoro for any and all anti-trust implications. With this sale Tesoro would now control virtually all gasoline production and storage facilities in Alaska, and as such would have nearly total control of gas prices across the state.

In a letter sent Wednesday to the Attorney General, Sen. Wielechowski noted, “The already delicately balanced retail gas market in Alaska will be dominated by one company should this sale be approved, keeping further competition from the state and hiking prices for customers.”

Sen. Wielechowski has been a consistent voice in the legislature seeking to have strong anti-price gouging language placed in statute to help shield Alaskans from the near monopolistic gas market in the state. “When one company controls virtually all gasoline production and storage, we do not have a competitive free market and Alaskans stand to suffer,” said Sen. Wielechowski.

Sen. Wielechowski has repeatedly asked for answers as to why Alaskans often pay the highest gas prices in the nation despite low taxes and local refineries. His most recent request for investigation into price gouging was denied by Governor Walker in December.
