STATEMENTS: Senate Democrats Comment on Medicaid Expansion Lawsuit Failure

Alaska Senate Democrats Applaud Court Ruling Denying Republican Attempt to Prolong Medicaid Lawsuit Against the Governor

Senate Minority Leader Berta Gardner (D-Anchorage) – “Republican-led Majorities in the Senate and the House have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars of state money pursuing a lawsuit and appeals which they know they cannot win.  Where is the fiscal restraint in paying expensive lawyers on both sides of the case while cutting essential services to Alaskans?  The Alaska Senate Democrats have been pushing back on this lawsuit and are glad to see it finally put to rest.”

Senator Bill Wielechowski (D-Anchorage) – “This action taken by House leadership was illegal, according to the legislature’s own lawyers, and now the Court. It is a waste of taxpayers’ money to continue this frivolous lawsuit. It’s time to focus on the things that move Alaska forward instead of those things that try to drag us apart.”

Senator Johnny Ellis (D-Anchorage) – “The bottom line is that the Republicans basically voted to sue the state to take federally-funded health care away from 40,000 sick people. Medicaid expansion has been a huge cost-saver for Alaska, it has helped thousands of Alaskans, and provided new jobs in the health care sector. The effort put into stopping this is inexplicable and shameful.”

Senator Dennis Egan (D-Juneau) – “It’s been silly from the beginning.  Our own attorneys said the lawsuit has no merit. So did the Department of Law. A court agreed. And this latest round of shenanigans failed. It’s over and that’s good for the people of Alaska.  We have real work to do, let’s get back to it.”
