Senator Berta Gardner, Midtown Anchorage District I, is originally from Salt Lake City, Utah. She is married to Michael Gardner, and has three grown children and four grandchildren.

Prior to serving in the Alaska State Legislature, Senator Gardner worked as a bookkeeper, office manager, and as a Guardian ad Litem (advocate for children in state custody). She has always been active in her community volunteering in schools, community councils and neighborhood groups. Her volunteer work eventually led her to run for public office, where her primary legislative focus continues to be children’s and women’s advocacy, as well as supporting our public education system.

Senator Gardner has served on the House Resources, Community and Regional Affairs, Labor and Commerce, Education and Health and Social Services and was Minority Whip. Currently, she is the Senate Minority Caucus leader, serving on the Senate Education Committee, and on the statewide Suicide Prevention Council.

In her spare time, Senator Gardner enjoys being with her family, traveling, hiking and cooking.
