Dear Friends and Neighbors,
The time’s winding down for the session, and there is a lot going on. Things are either stalled or moving too quickly. You can follow the weekend activity on Gavel to Gavel, and I’ll put out a more thorough wrap-up next week.
Governor’s Appointees- With almost 90 appointees needing confirmation we will meet Sunday in a joint Floor session with the House. These Alaskans deserve an up-or-down vote, and having it on adjournment day is pretty unusual. Keep an eye on us.
Proud Douglas-ite Nona Dimond works for my neighbor Sen. Stevens. We wished her a happy birthday this week!
Haines State Forester Amendment- I want to share a video of the amendment I offered today on a timber bill. The goal of the amendment was to safeguard the Haines State Forestry office. We need a local position to ensure multiple use in our state’s only forest resource management area. Flying someone in once in a while to check in on the numerous activities that take place over 286,000 acres is not the answer! It didn’t pass, but I’m not done trying. Here’s the link:
Medicaid Expansion- Alaskans support of Medicaid Expansion. Cities, nonprofits, Rs, Ds, Hospitals, individuals, and more. My office has been flooded with heartfelt testimony from some of the 40,000+ Alaskans the expansion would cover. The Governor reminded us at a rally yesterday that Medicaid expansion is not a financial issue, and it’s not a political party issue. It’s an Alaska issue!
Marcello Quinto, Annika Ord, Gov. Walker, and me at the Medicaid expansion rally!

Thanks to these community members for
helping make Southeast a great place to live!
JDHS senior Samantha Heidersdorf wins the Bill Ruddy memorial scholarship. Glacier Valley Rotary picks a high school junior or senior every year and awards them a $4000.00 college scholarship in honor of the late Bill Ruddy. Bill’s wife Kathy presented Samantha the scholarship this last weekend. Samantha plans to attend the University of Arizona for a nursing degree. Kudos to Samantha!
Port Chilkoot Distillery brings home the GOLD! The 15th Annual World Spirits Competition was held in San Francisco at the end of March. Over 1,500 entries competed, and Haines’ Port Chilkoot Distillery won the highest award – double gold – for its hit seller: 50 Fathoms Gin. Kudos on the big win to the only distillery in Southeast!!
Thanks for reading Legislative Corner. I hope you'll always feel welcome to contact my office, just call, write, or use one of the links in this newsletter.
