Anchorage Caucus This Weekend

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Senator GaSenator Gardner on the Floor
Senator Gardner on the Floor

This Saturday the Anchorage Legislative Caucus will be holding a public meeting for Anchorage residents to share their concerns and suggestions for state issues and the upcoming session.  Your input guides our work at the capitol and we hope for a strong turn-out.

What:     Anchorage Legislative Caucus

Where:   Assembly Chambers at the Loussac Library

When:    Saturday, January 10
                  9am to 2pm

As you may be aware, oil prices are plummeting.  That is good news for consumers at the gas pump, but that also means dramatic revenue losses for the state of Alaska.  How do you see foresee a balanced budget? I would like to hear your ideas and suggestions regarding how to slash the budget and how to bring in more revenue to the state before we head to Juneau. I look forward to seeing you there.

Understanding Alaska's Fiscal Future - A Presentation by the Institute of Social & Economic Research (ISER), and by the non-partisan Alaska Common Ground

Falling oil prices over the past several months have added to the fiscal challenge Alaska’s state government already faced: North Slope oil production, which has largely paid for government operations since the 1970s, is less than a third of what it once was. Gunnar Knapp, ISER’s Director, and Cliff Groh, the Chair of Alaska Common Ground, are planning a series of presentations to help Alaskans understand the state’s fiscal situation.

Their presentations at ISER offices will be the first in that series, and they will encourage the audience to ask questions and offer suggestions for improvement. Gunnar Knapp will describe the fiscal situation, providing an overview of the state’s revenues, expenditures, and savings. Cliff Groh will discuss the challenges that situation poses and outline the options for dealing with them. They will not advocate for any specific option or course of action, but rather they hope to help set the stage for an informed discussion among Alaskans.

When: Wednesday, January 7, 12 to 1

Where: ISER Conference Room, Fifth Floor, Diplomacy Building

Note: Those who can’t attend in person can join us remotely over the web or call (907) 786-6755, Conference ID: 475905. A recording of the talk will also be posted on the ISER website (www.iser.uaa.alaska.edu).
