Halfway Through Session and
Here's What You Had to Say

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I would like to thank everyone who completed the Spenard, Midtown, UMed survey.  Representatives Josephson and Drummond and I have been pleased by the responses, including the heartfelt comments which often spilled over across the pages.  I’ve read all of them and many have really stayed with me.  Here are examples – some with my response.

  • Move out of the overpriced Legislative building and move into a shopping center or a state building.  Cut travel, staff and per diem.
  • The tax ideas show that Democrats do not want to control spending.  (We did not design this survey but borrowed, with permission, the survey designed by AKFuture.org – a consortium of business interests lead by GCI)
  • There is too much cutting from the budget, and…Cut more from the budget.
  • I don’t know enough to answer this question.  That’s your job, and…Thank you for the survey.  It’s a great way for us to share our opinions.
  • Don’t touch oil tax credits, and…End all oil tax credits.
  • Use the PFD before taxes, and… Income tax first and PFD last.
  • The best way to ensure all Alaskans are contributing is to use the Earnings Reserve Account (ERA), and…Once you use the ERA you will bleed it dry and it will be gone.
  • Sunset all new taxes, or allow them to fluctuate depending on resource revenue.
  • We understand that sometimes it’s the job of a lawmaker to do what’s best for constituents, even if it is not what they want.

These are the results.  I’m delighted that so many respondents understand we have a real problem and are following the issue.  I also get a kick out of the fact that the Governor’s approval ratings are so much higher than the legislature’s.  Before I lose you, please remember that our constituent Town Hall is Saturday, March 5th, 11-12:30, at Steller Secondary School.

I’m Berta and I’m still listening,
