Your Voice on the Operating Budget
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
The operating budget being drafted in the legislature is starting to take shape, and you are invited to participate in the process!
How do I provide public testimony?
Given the attention the Budget bill is going to get, public testimony is being divided according to which part of the state a resident is calling from. Anchorage residents will get their first chance to call on Wednesday, March 9, from 9:00-10:45 a.m.
If you are interested in testifying, please go to the Anchorage Legislative Information Office building located at 716 W. 4th Avenue.
For other areas of the state:
Monday, March 7
Tuesday, March 8
Wednesday, March 9
If you would prefer to provide written testimony, you can do so by emailing:Senate.Finance.Committee@akleg.gov.
Who is on the Senate Finance Committee?
The House will pass their version of the operating budget some time mid-week, and the Senate intends to bring it forward to the full Senate on March 12th and 14th.
It’s unusual for the budget to pass both the House and Senate so quickly. The fact that it has means that the legislature will be governed by “the 24 hour rule” for a full 34 days, by the appointment of the conference committee. In other words, the legislature only has to give the public one day, instead of 5 days notice for bill hearings. Usually this rule is in effect for only about 10 days, so this move is extremely significant. Pay close attention, because bills can be moved very quickly.
