A Chance for Rural Students?

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I'm Berta and I'm Still Listening

I recently had the opportunity to listen to a presentation by the Alaska Learning Network (AKLN) and I was so impressed by the program that I just had to share it with my neighbors.

AKLN has been around, in one incarnation or another, for about 20 years, working to improve the learning experience for students from small and remote schools. Today, AKLN is also focusing on helping students find the variety and rigor required for them to qualify for the Alaska Performance Scholarship, regardless of where they live or the size of their community.

The network is a collaboration of all 53 school districts focused on increasing student achievement by assuring that all students, regardless of where they live or the size of their community, have access to highly qualified teachers and the variety of academic courses that can be found in our large urban schools.

AKLN offers classes through online distance learning, many of which are designed to help students qualify for the Alaska Performance Scholarship, as well as professional development to help teachers and administrators use new technology effectively. AKLN also is creating a library of online classroom lectures.

Many of the classes are available for dual credit (high school and college). Sadly, the House Education Budget Subcommittee has eliminated the funding in their version. I find it troubling as the work done by AKLN is a boon to students who have few other options for high quality courses. The budget process is far from over. I will be working to find support for AKLN, one initiative which helps to fill the vacuum for students in small and remote schools.

I’m Berta and I’m still listening,
