Medicaid Expansion is Here!

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Today I am so pleased to stand in unity with and support of Governor Bill Walker and his decision to expand Medicaid in Alaska without the help of the majorities in the Senate and House. We have worked hard to help Gov. Walker keep his promise to expand Medicaid, but we and the governor have met politically-motivated resistance from the Republican majorities at every step.

Expanding Medicaid will bring hundreds of millions of federal dollars to Alaska, open up thousands of good jobs for Alaskans and it will provide thousands of Alaskans with access to affordable, quality health care. Those are practical, sensible and moral outcomes, and there is no reason, other than partisan politics, to keep those benefits from Alaskans. We have been resolved in our determination to do the right thing, and we support the governor’s decision and stand in unity with his courage to ignore partisan politics and stand up for Alaskans.

We sincerely hope Republican majority leadership will accept the governor’s decision and not attempt to block expansion by playing games with our already-sensitive budget process or by other means. Governor Walker stands with Alaskans on this issue, and we stand with him. This is one of those issues that transcend politics and that should be immune from games and brinkmanship. Alaskans deserve real leadership on these important issues, especially in these challenging economic times.

I’m Berta and I’m still listening,
