Dear Friends and Neighbors,

The illicit photograph in question, taken at Ted Stevens International Airport.
The illicit photograph in question, taken at Ted Stevens International Airport.
But look how long the line is!

I consider myself to be generally law abiding, which is why I was shocked to learn today that the above photograph which I recently took and posted on Facebook is apparently a violation of AAC 42.060(f) which states “A person may not photograph or film a passenger screening area…”

I have inadvertently broken the law.  Maybe it’s a good thing I like to wear orange?

All joking aside, this is a ridiculous regulation. To make matters worse, it’s not even something we can blame on Federal overreach, this is our own policy and a worrisome example of the slow erosion of our civil rights. We’ve gotten so used to the long lines, the pat downs, the body scans, shoe removal, etc., that something like this slips by almost unnoticed.

That’s why I’d like to thank Representative Lora Reinbold for bringing it to my attention.  While I don’t often agree with the Representative on legislative issues, I stand with her in protection of a most basic civil right - the right to move freely around the country, even to take a picture that might include government employees doing the public's work in a public area.

You can contact DOT Commissioner Kemp, whose agency wrote this regulation, and tell him what you think.
