Special Session Starts Saturday

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Recently, I presented a legislative citation to YWCA to honor their work in the community. If you know of an individual or organization that deserves honoring, please feel free to let me know.

In a few days legislators will head down to Juneau for the 3rd Special Session. Governor Walker has called us to convene in Juneau for two topics:

1 -  We will debate his proposal for a gas reserves tax on undeveloped North Slope natural gas.  The Governor believes that just as in pre-oil pipeline days, a reserves tax can be a tool to break a deadlock and move the project forward. Is he right?  I don't know but am eager to hear the presentations.

In case you missed it or want to review, here is a link to the Governor's editorial piece about the issue.

2 -  We will debate budget appropriations for the state’s participation in the natural gas pipeline project (AKLNG) and the state’s option to buy TransCanada’s share of the gas pipeline and treatment facility.  TransCanada is under contract to build the pipeline and is currently entitled to a share of the project.  By buying out TransCanada, Alaska would own a total of 25 percent of the project and have equal footing with each of the other three stakeholders, Exxon, BP and Conoco Phillips, instead of being a minority partner with TransCanada.

Again, I have not taken a position on this proposal and go down to Juneau with an open mind.  You can be sure I will ask lots of questions.

Postponed Constituent Meeting

At the request of members of Rogers Park Community Council, Representatives Harriet Drummond and Andy Josephson and I were going to hold an October constituent meeting. Due to the special session call, we are going to have to postpone it. Look for an invitation for some time in early January!

I’m Berta and I’m still listening,

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact my office.
