Dear Friends and Neighbors,

The pace in Juneau is fast and furious.  I have introduced a variety of bills to protect your interests, grow our economy, and improve our schools. Here are two of the bills I will be fighting for on your behalf:

Protecting your PFD

I am sponsoring a bill (SJR 13) that would enshrine the PFD in Alaska’s Constitution so it can’t be taken away at the whim of the legislature.  As revenues decline with the new oil tax structure, legislators will look for other ways to fill our growing budget gap.  I will not stand for any attempt to cap or take away your PFD.  It is too important to Alaskans families.  If Alaska receives a fair share of our oil wealth, we will have plenty of revenue to provide critical public services.

Sick Leave for Alaskans

I have also introduced a bill (SB 126) that would require employers with more than 15 employees to provide their workers with at least 1 hour of sick leave for every 40 hours worked.  This will help ensure that the roughly 120,000 Alaskans who lack sick leave don’t have to choose between their health or the health of their loved ones and their paycheck.

Mark your Calendars: Meet your Legislators on Feb 22

On Saturday, February 22nd, legislators from throughout Anchorage will gather to hear your recommendations on the pressing issues facing our city and state.  Join us in the Assembly Chambers at the Loussac Library (3600 Denali Street) from 9am-2pm.  Your ideas are critical to our success!

East Anchorage Town Hall and Pizza Party: Feb 22

That same afternoon from 3:30-5:00 pm at the NE Boys and Girls Club (1251 Muldoon Rd), I will co-host a pizza party and town hall meeting.  This will be another chance for you to come and ask questions, share your views and meet your neighbors.  For more information, call 800-550-2435.  I look forward to seeing you there.

Rally for Alaska’s Olympians Tonight!

Tonight rally for Alaskans who will be competing in the Olympics at the downtown Town Square from 5-6:30.  Come out and show your support for four-time Olympian Kikkan Randall, Holly Brooks, Sadie Bjornsen, and Erik Bjornsen (cross-country skiing), Ryan Stassel (slope style snowboarding), and Jessica Shultz (curling).  Mingle with past Olympians from Alaska, sip free hot cocoa and coffee, and be in a group video wishing our athletes the gold in Sochi.

First Friday gallery walk is also tonight

Join the fun as galleries around Anchorage showcase some of Alaskans’ finest artwork.  Many galleries are open from 5 p.m. and offer free refreshments.  The Anchorage Museum will showcase the opening of Gyre: The Plastic Ocean, with artist and scientist talks. It will also host Fulldome Friday in the Planetarium, and live jazz.

Reminder: Apply for Your PFD by march 31

The deadline to apply for your PFD is March 31.  You can apply on-line at www.pfd.alaska.gov or submit a paper application.  Applications are available at 550 W 7th Avenue, Suite 100. While you’re applying, consider giving to your favorite charity thru the Pick. Click. Give. program.

As always, feel free to get in touch with me if you have any thoughts or suggestions.

Warmly,
