Dear Friends and Neighbors,
For nearly a decade, residents of East Anchorage have worked to create a Town Square Park at the old Alaska Greenhouse site, where Muldoon meets Debarr. Over the years, the legislature has appropriated more than $1 million to help this effort.
On Tuesday, March 11, the Assembly passed an ordinance setting aside the land for a park. It received support from 9 out of 11 Assembly members.
Unfortunately, Mayor Sullivan recently vetoed the ordinance as he prefers to see a big portion of the land developed. The Assembly has 21 days in which to override that veto. The vote could take place as early as tonight.
Please express your support for this neighborhood project today to members of the Assembly. You can find contact info for them here or email them all at once at email@example.com.
You can also go to the Assembly meeting tonight to voice your support. The meeting will take place at the Loussac Library at 3600 Denali Street, starting at 5 p.m. At the end of the meeting, members of the public can speak for up to 3 minutes on a topic of their choice. Meetings sometimes run late (tonight’s could go until 8 p.m. or later), so there may be a wait.
Youth advocates from around the state visited Juneau last week to learn more about the political process and present their views.
Deadline Nears to Sign up for Health Insurance
Time is running out for Alaskans to sign up for subsidized health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. The deadline is March 31, just six days from now. Please spread the word!
Only about 5 percent of eligible Alaskans have enrolled. Those without health insurance could face a penalty and won’t be able to sign up for coverage for almost a year.
If you need help with the process, you can call United Way’s 2-1-1 line or go online to make an appointment with a professional.
File for Your PFD Now!
The deadline to apply for a PFD is also March 31, so apply today! You can apply online here.
While you’re at it, consider making a donation to an Alaskan charity through the Pick. Click. Give program. It’s easy and makes a huge difference in the lives of fellow Alaskans.
This past weekend I participated in the Annual Legislative Shoot with fellow Senators Berta Gardner and Hollis French.
