The Session is Over

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I'm disappointed it took so long, but the special session is finally over.

After much negotiation, the House and Senate reached a compromise yesterday on the budget and on the passage of a bill to help protect kids from sex abuse and dating violence.

The budget bill includes over $800 million in cuts. I voted to allow the use of the Constitutional Budget Reserve (our savings account) because I did not want to see a government shut down or a potential raid on the Permanent Fund. But I voted against the budget itself because I believe it still had the wrong priorities and still spent too much. In fact, I had proposed over $750 million in additional cuts and restoration of about $45 million for things that you have told me are important - like public safety and education.

The budget reduced education funding, but not as much as some wanted. It cut Senior Benefits, but not as much as originally proposed. The budget also funded things like the new Anchorage Legislative Information Office, which increased our rent by millions per year and $700 million in oil tax credits, even though the law only requires us to fund $91 million. It was simply a budget I could not agree to.

I believe there are areas we must cut in state government - from $440,000 executive salaries and benefits to bloated and unnecessary state agencies. I will continue to fight for a lean and efficient  government that delivers the things that are important to you.

And I did just want you to know that I did NOT request or receive any per diem for this special session.

Glenn Highway / Muldoon Road Interchange Project

Last week, I attended an open house for the Glenn Highway/ Muldoon Road Interchange project. Construction on this state- and federally-funded project is scheduled to begin this Fall and continue in stages through Fall of 2018. This 40-year-old interchange serves more than 80,000 cars per day and requires a massive upgrade to improve driver safety, traffic efficiency and pedestrian accessibility.

The new design is called a Diverging Diamond Interchange and will result in a total reconstruction of the Glenn/Muldoon interchange. Project managers assured us that construction will be done in stages, primarily during summer months, and that each stage will be more efficient for traffic than the current interchange. It is also the most cost-effective and requires the least disturbance of adjacent properties.

If you’re interested in learning more, I encourage you to watch the short video explaining the new traffic pattern on the project website.

The Children’s Lunch Box, the Anchorage School District and the Food Bank of Alaska are teaming up to make sure no child goes hungry this summer. Across the state, 36,000 students qualify for free or reduced-price school lunches, but lose access to them during the summer months.

To support these kids and their families, the Children’s Lunch Box and ASD will serve free meals at 36 locations across Anchorage. The Food Bank will provide 63,000 meals to children elsewhere across the state.
