Dear Friends and Neighbors,

For years I and others have been fighting to prevent gasoline price gouging in Alaska. Again last fall, when Alaska's gasoline prices became the highest in the nation, I called on the Attorney General to investigate. Immediately, prices began to plummet more than $1 per gallon - three times the national rate.

The problem we have in Alaska is we have very few refineries, and therefore no free market. In fact, after the closure of Flint Hills refinery in North Pole, Tesoro now controls virtually 100% of the gasoline refining market. So when Tesoro announced its intention to buy nearly all the gasoline storage capacity in Anchorage from Flint Hills, I knew this had the potential to make a bad situation for consumers even worse.

That's why last January I called on the Attorney General to investigate this proposed purchase for potential anti-trust issues. This week the Attorney General concluded his investigation and is requiring Tesoro to sell one of its storage terminals. While not a complete solution to the problem of high gas prices in Alaska, this is good news for consumers because it helps create a little more of a free market. With increased free market competition coming with a new entrant in the gas storage market, this should help somewhat.

I still believe more needs to be done long term to solve the problem of high gasoline prices in Alaska, but this is a good start.

As many of you know, my colleagues and I have fought long and hard alongside East Anchorage neighbors for years to establish a Muldoon Town Square Park at Muldoon & Debarr.  I’ve been dedicated to supporting this project and am excited we’ll be seeing progress on it soon.

I’ve also been very vocal in my opposition to the Muldoon medians, given the number of constituents and business owners I’ve heard from that disagree with the median locations.  It’s no secret to the Department of Transportation (DOT) that Muldoon residents don’t want more medians.

So, imagine my surprise when I found out the DOT requested the use of Muldoon Park Strip funds to add more medians to Muldoon Road, just south of Debarr Road.

Needless to say, I am working with Rep. Gabrielle LeDoux and Assemblyman Pete Petersen to ensure grant funds for the Muldoon Town Square Park are protected.  We have informed the Anchorage Parks Department that the grant in question may not be used for medians, and have issued an official letter to DOT Commissioner Mark Luiken

I promise to keep working on this until the issue is resolved, and look forward to enjoying our new park with friends and neighbors soon!
