Dear Friends and Neighbors,

The school year has officially begun. Please take extra care and watch for kids as they make their way to and from school. A good way for parents to learn the safest routes for kids to walk to school is provided on the Municipality of Anchorage website. The Anchorage School District also provides a website that has information about getting to and from school safely for parents and children. To find this information please click the links provided.

Hunger Action Month: Help Out If You Can

September is Hunger Action Month.  More than 106,000 people in Alaska don't know where their next meal is coming from, according to the Food Bank of Alaska.  One way you can help is by gathering food as part of the United Way of Anchorage Day of Caring Food Drive.  This will take place on Friday, September 14 from 11 am — 6 pm at the Sears Mall parking lot. All nonperishable food donations will be accepted. You can also deliver food any time to Food Bank of Alaska, 2121 Spar Ave.

There are other ways you can help too. You can enter a team in the Anchorage CROP Hunger Walk and food drive that will be held on September 22. Click here for more info. Or, you might organize a virtual food drive. Food Bank of Alaska can secure five pounds of food with every $1 donated. You can also make a donation to Food Bank of Alaska through the Pick.Click.Give program. For more information about the Food Bank of Alaska, go to their website at http://www.foodbankofalaska.org/.

52 Reasons to Repeal the Oil Wealth Giveaway

Last week, I began to post a reason a week to repeal Senate Bill 21, Governor Parnell’s oil wealth giveaway legislation.  It's likely all Alaskans will have a chance to vote on this issue next August. As most of you know, a group of dedicated citizens collected nearly 52,000 signatures to put the question on next year's ballot.

I'm posting my 52 reasons on a new website (www.ItsOurOil.blogspot.com). They will also be tweeted from @Wielechowski, on my Facebook page and at www.senatorbill.org.

I will also publish reasons submitted by fellow Alaskans. If you have a reason you'd like to share, please send it to repealSB21now@gmail.com

I'm doing this because many Alaskans have not had an opportunity to learn about this issue in depth. I figured providing a reason a week would be a fun and easy way to share many of the facts that have been presented to legislators over the past several years. These facts have certainly convinced me that SB 21 is one of the worst laws to ever have been enacted in Alaska.
