Special Session Update

As you’ve likely heard, the Alaska State Legislature is on its way back to Juneau for a special session on the Alaska natural gas pipeline, set to begin this Saturday, October 24th.

Proclaimed by Governor Walker as a result of timeline requirements set out in Senate Bill 138,  the goal of the special session is to explore three key topics:

1)      Natural Gas Reserves Tax:  Reinstating a gas reserves tax on North Slope resources still in the ground, in an effort to incentivize producers towards completion of a gasline, or make their gas available to Alaskans in case the project does not proceed.

2)      TransCanada Buyout:  Considering the state’s option to purchase TransCanada’s share of the gas pipeline and treatment facility, giving the State of Alaska a 25% share in the project.

3)      Appropriations for Costs to Reach FEED Decision: Making budget appropriations to fund the state’s part in the remaining work to continue pre-front end engineering and design (Pre-FEED) to ultimately reach a FEED decision.

I look forward to learning more about the Governor’s proposals as we delve into the details both through legislative briefings and my work on the Senate Resources Committee.  I'm hoping people can put politics aside and work together to move this project forward.

Working for Lower Gasoline Prices

I suppose it's just a coincidence, but I'm very glad to see gasoline prices have dropped by roughly $1 per gallon in Anchorage since I called for an investigation into the outrageously high gas prices here in Alaska. When I called for this investigation, Alaska's gasoline prices were the highest in the nation, even though the oil comes from Alaska, is refined right here and we have the lowest gasoline taxes in the nation. As of now, prices have fallen about four times the national average and we no longer have the highest prices in the nation.

I know how important this issue is to you, so I'll still keep fighting to keep prices at a reasonable level.

Giving Alaskans a Vote on the PFD

As I've talked with you over the years, I've heard how important the Permanent Fund Dividend is to help feed families, pay for school and just get by. That's why I've sponsored numerous pieces of legislation during my time in office to grow and protect the Permanent Fund.

Now, some are talking about using the Permanent Fund to pay for government. I'm concerned about this and believe there are better ways to solve our budget problems.  That's why I've sponsored a resolution to let the people vote to protect the Permanent Fund in the Constitution.

Protect the PFD
